An outsized mantle recreates the traditional hearth welcome found in older homes. The look works as well in a large kitchen as it does in a cosy country cottage," says Jasper Middleton, Company Director, Middleton Bespoke. "Leave plenty of worktop space either side of the range cooker for plating up meals and resting hot pans.

According to Jasper Middleton, director of Middleton Bespoke the ideal size for an island is 650mm x 1000mm as this provides a useful work surface and can accommodate a drawer in the side of the island, providing storage space for pots and pans. "However, 700mm X 1400mm works well in a larger kitchen," he says "The key is to ensure that the island doesn't interrupt the flow of the kitchen by being too large. Sometimes the bigger isn't necessarily better." Anything less than 950mm x 450mm would be too small to be practical. All elements and appliances should be set within easy reach of each other without being crowded.
